Chemotherapy
Mouth sores occur when chemotherapy destroys fast-growing healthy cells like those lining your mouth. To help manage mucositis, follow these useful tips:

Rinse your mouth often with salt water.
Use a soft toothbrush.
Ask your doctor about medications to relieve mouth pain (oral anesthetics)—in liquid, spray, and gel form—that can help you eat.
Avoid eating spicy or salty foods, citrus fruits, or tomatoes, as well as foods with rough or hard textures.
Take small bites, and chew slowly.
Avoid coffee and caffeinated tea.
Stir sodas first to eliminate bubbles.
Consider soothing liquid or near-liquid foods such as soups, yogurts, purees, shakes, and smoothies. Liquid supplements offer full nutrition.
Food temperature is important—not too hot and not too cold, although some people find relief in frozen foods such as ice cream.
Don't use tobacco.

Neulasta® (pegfilgrastim) is prescribed to reduce the risk of infection (initially marked by fever) in patients with some tumors receiving strong chemotherapy that decreases the number of infection-fighting white blood cells.
